Master Your Gut Method

A three month group program dedicated to the constipated women that are done with the guessing game and ready for their gut issues to stop holding them back (open to whatever paragraph font pairs best with the DM serif display)

I'll be honest with you, the conventional, and even some of the natural approaches are just trying to override the constipation without solving the root of the problem

I truly hate telling my patients this, but there are no quick fixes or one magical thing that will get rid of the gut issues when it comes to constipation. Anything quick, like a laxative is just a band aid, covering up the real problem. The thing is, we’re not mad that bandaids exist, they’re not harmful, but when the bandaids are removed, nothing is fixed and you’re still constipated.

If your goal is to have a bowel movement daily,  without a laxative then deep work to the sensory system while promoting motility needs to be done.

Motility Triggers & Sensory Function
Motility is simply the movement of the gut, and it’s a built in reflex you are born with.

Reflexes need to be triggered.
A motility trigger is like the person yelling at the starting line of a race. This reality is, do you actually have to run when someone says go?

No

And that’s where sensory function comes into play

The Sensory system is part of the nervous system that lives in the gut and spans from the throat all the way to the rectum. It is continuously sensing the environment down in there, including motility triggers and responding appropriately to whatever it is sensing.
If either one of these systems, or both is functionally impaired, constipation plus a whole slew of other issues can begin.

First it starts off minimal, and then compounds and worsens over time when it doesn’t get the correct support.

Sensory neurons in the gut directly react & respond to the commensal microbes and pathogens (if present) in the gut

mi·cro·bi·ome
/ˈmīkrōˌbīˌōm/
trillions of microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses colonizing the gastrointestinal tract

The body hosts a large amount of microorganisms, and one of the largest communities lives in the gut, and we often call it the microbiome

We get benefit from these microbes & these microbes get benefit from us which is why they stick around in such high numbers and why the body doesn’t get rid of them.

When either the host (us) or the microbiome (community of microbes) is in distress or out of balance, one or the other is impacted.

We see imbalances in the microbiome in constipated people. The master your gut method does not ignore how profound of an affect the microbiome has on the gut, and vice versa.

I get it and I was there once too. To survive, I normalized it all. I decided feeling bloated and uncomfortable all day was just my normal, and I needed to get used to it. If this feels like you, I want you to know I see you. This isn’t happening because constipation is super complex, it’s because you were never given the care you deserved right away and now there are new problems created from being chronically constipated that make it more difficult to treat. Not impossible, but more difficult.

When constipation becomes chronic it begins impacting the functionality of the pelvic floor, digestion, the microbiome and compounding all of this together means treating it requires a very precise approach that has to be built specifically for constipation, not just “gut healing”.

Does this sound familiar to you?

Have you been told to eat more fiber? What about drinking more water? Or even to try a low FODMAP diet?

None of these suggestions are constipation specific. Let me break it down for you.

When scientific studies are put together, the researchers need to pick a population of people to study and an outcome to look at. In 99% of the studies where the outcome was better bowel movements from drinking more water, the population that was being studied was NOT constipated. So yes, when non constipated people drank more water, they pooped better. I am happy for them, truly, but then why are you A CONSTIPATED person getting the advice to drink more water? Beats me.

There is a major difference between replenishing a deficiency versus using something therapeutically. Replenishing a water deficiency helps literally any human being feel better. The thing is, water is not therapeutic for constipation. It does not fix the root cause of the problem. This is why when you try it out, nothing seems to get better.

This same conundrum exists for the advice of trying a low FODMAP diet or to generally increase fiber consumption. These are not constipation specific recommendations and it’s why I build a protocol that has ONLY constipation specific recommendations.

Stop throwing things against the wall and hoping something sticks

I think when we envision trying hard to fix our problems, we often take the approach of “lets try everything and anything”.

I will die on the hill trying to talk people out of this because I think it does more harm than good, because when all of those things don’t work you end up feeling like there is something more wrong with you, than other constipated people.

And that’s just not true! I promise you’re not a medical mystery

A lot of therapeutics including nutrition, supplements, medications, lifestyle changes follow the basic rules of medicine

The need to condition specific

They need to be taken at the right dose for YOU

They need to be taken for enough time

There needs to be a way to track if its working and if adjustments need to be made

In my experience when I talk to people who feel they have been trying hard and doing all the things, they haven’t met the above four criteria in most of the things they have tried.

It’s not your fault, I have so much respect for the determination you have.

I am here to tell you that it’s not your job to have all the answers, it’s mine and the health care systems job.

I’m letting you off the hook.

Imagine what you could achieve if your body felt good again.

These are some things my constipation clients have discovered is possible for them

  • A bowel movement every single day
  • Pooping every morning before having to leave the house
  • Taking 60 seconds to poop
  • No more rabbit pellet poops
  • No longer feeling bloated
  • Not being overly restricted on what to eat
  • Going out to dinner and not having to pick the “cleanest” meal on the menu
  • Not being scared of anal fissures ever again

Here is why my approach is a little different than what you’ve tried before

Experiencing chronic health issues makes us extremely vigilant with every change in our body. If that vigilance leads to anxiety it can actually backtrack us on our healing process. By being very hands on with each case, I make sure each client understands their body and what their symptoms truly mean, which is usually different than what social media or Dr.google has told them.

I think on the journey to finding the root cause, WHY, which I think many people in the holistic health space are pretty good at, the actual HOW to fix it gets lost in the matrix. Understanding the root cause of constipation (motility triggers + sensory function) is not even half the battle. You also need to know how to efficiently and successfully treat it. This is usually where I see things fall apart, and I have women coming to me with thousands of dollars worth of testing they have run and somehow they are still not feeling better. Testing and knowing the root cause don’t mean much if no one knows how to treat it. I have spent thousands of hours over the years honing in on the treatment part of constipation because that’s the part that actually makes you feel different and initiates real change.

If you’ve been on my social media for a while, you may have seen one of my rants about incorrect information that spirals through social media because someone has read a research paper incorrectly. I don’t rant because I think the person intentionally did something wrong, I don’t think there is malicious intent and you don’t know what you don’t know. Yet it still doesn’t make the outcome of false information being spread, okay. My undergraduate degree is in Biopharmaceutical science, and there was constant emphasis on how to breakdown, an critically assess a research paper. This was years of my education. What I teach in my protocol doesn’t have any marketing fluff, or BS from reading research incorrectly. It’s a summary of the actual science out there on treating constipation holistically.

I have laughed about this topic with so many women I have worked with. WHY do we feel that because our symptoms are so intense that means we need to do the most intense thing to fix it? A crazy elimination diet, a parasite cleanse, a 3 day water fast, $1000 worth of testing. INTENSE. I want you to have to do the most minimal stuff possible to get results and often my clients are amazed when some of the easiest things they implement kickstart their improvement!

Here is what you get when you join

4x 1:1 calls (to be used within 14wks)

Private one-on ones are how everything gets extremely personalized to your specific case. We get a chance to go over progress and next steps and talk about anything you may not feel comfortable sharing in a group setting.

Weekly group calls (14wks)

Weekly group calls are to troubleshoot, get all your weekly questions answered so they don't build up and most importantly is a way to interact with the community of other women working through the same stuff you are!

Community Access (14wks)

Community is healing, don't underestimate it. Knowing you are not going through this alone, and leaning on a community of people who understand you feels nothing short of magic.

Daily Check In Access (14wks)

Quick questions get answered daily so they don’t build up and one on one calls or group calls can prioritize more deeper conversations.

Constipation Curriculum (lifetime access)

This is all the compiled scientific data on what is going wrong in a constipated bowel, and what to do about it. It is broken down weekly into bite sized, easy to understand lessons. There are also many bonuses including cycle tracking, meal plans and other lessons on gut directed topics.

Your questions answered

I take 8-10 women per cohort! It’s important to me that I keep the groups on the smaller side so I can give each person the attention and care they need and deserve!

No! We have no data to show that elimination and highly restricted diets improve constipation. There are very unique circumstances in which I recommend therapeutic diets like the low FODMAP and this is highly individualized and quite rare in constipation.

I think the easiest thing to resonate with is you need to be able to commit about the same time as listening to a podcast a week. Time is not the biggest commitment, showing up is, being willing to troubleshoot and implementation is. You’re never alone on the hard stuff, that’s what I am here for.

You’re not constipated because you’re unhealthy, trust me. The Master Your Gut Method is still a wonderful option even if you feel you’ve tried it all, you’re super healthy and eat cleaner than most people you know. Eating healthy isn’t eating therapeutically to treat constipation.
